Surkin - Next of Kin EP (Institubes)

3/5

By: Charlie Bradford

Surkin - Next of Kin EPSurkin, already a renowned remixer, dropped out of art college to produce his own music and hasn't looked back. This, his most recent EP, showcases his talent to the best degree yet.

It starts with 'White Knight Two', reminiscent of a mid nineties dance floor filler. It's all about flashing lights and people moving their arms and bodies frantically to climactic beats whilst repetitive electronic voices bounce back and forth like a broken record and the pop tart beats take a more fractious point of view. Utter brilliance, or total hell, depending on your constitution.

The following 'Kid Gloves' is like Michael Jackson's Thriller being remixed by the chipmunks, so Jacko it is that I can almost picture him getting confused over whether to moonwalk or do that bendy ankles dance he does... the two combined is the only option, Michael. Even the Thunderbirds style countdown in the centre of the songs is strangely likeable.

The closing title track is like some kind of 80's pop homage, bringing to mind leotard clad dancers with large hair and head bands emerging in smooth aerobatic movements from the smoke, all set in a industrial wasteland. As the music becomes more acerbic, so would their movements.

Don't take these references as negative - I actually find myself strangely drawn to Next of Kin, but maybe it's just the dancing that it conjures up that appeal. Whatever it is, make a space on the dance floor - I'm on my way.
