The Presets - This Boy’s In Love (Modular)
2/5
By: Charlie Bradford
Oh my god, the Pet Shop Boys have regrouped and gone back to doing what they do best, exuberant, garish electro pop! Hang on... wait... no, it's just The Presets, an Aussie duo made up of Kimberley Moyes, a lady whose keyboard skills are accompanied by Julian Hamilton's best Paul Banks of Interpol impression on vocals.
'This Boy's In Love's verses are a just a little repetitive, built around the same handful of notes ad infinitum. All fine and dandy, except the chorus doesn't provide much of a relief - they simply take the pitch up an octave higher and draw out the words 'this boy's in llllloooovvvveeee...' to breaking point. Then it's back to the usual few bars.
It possesses nothing to really irritate, it just lacks imagination. It's like the Presets have taken a page right out of an 80's book and printed it on uber shiny modern photo paper. As for the three accompanying mixes, well, they offer little diversity either. I'd stick to the original, and probably not even listen to that so often.
