Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma (XL)
4/5
By: Hannah Clark
It's within the essence of this songs simplicity where its genius lies. Ok, so it may be all too easy to criticise their 'soppy' frat boy appearance, but with such an unexpectedly endearing and witty lyrical content that seems to disjoint itself completely from its musical ties, its verging on the impossible to deny that 'Oxford Comma' is filled with the most exciting tingles of summer.
It's this unusual take on musical poetry with stunning imagery along the lines of "all your diction's dripping with disdain" which gives Vampire Weekend an infinite charm. 'Oxford Comma' is a song that single-handedly illustrates their unadulterated core talent. Previous single 'A Punk' became a suspiring radio favourite and the band's impressive climb to fame is heightened with their ability to top and exceed expectations with this gem to welcome in the sun.
There is something infinitely mysterious about Vampire Weekend as a band, their unique take on classic pop appears strikingly original, and their influences are masked just enough by their own redefinition of what makes a good song. The track is far from perfect however, their embryonic state may be the explanation to their sometimes awkward, angle driven sound but the fact that this is a song picked only from their debut album shows that their grace can only grow.
