White Williams - Violator (Double Six)
4/5
By: Sam Crawford
With the resurgence of 80's synth sounds into popular music of late, bands like Metronomy and New Young Pony Club have been championing these retro sounds that held such a strong grip on the 80's pop culture, while bringing new updated modes to the fore.
White Williams' 'Violator' is a welcome addition to the revival; utilising an upbeat groove at the heart of the bass line, whilst William's vocals have a warming personable touch to them; sounding like he views the world through some particularly effervescent rose tinted glasses. We are showered with simple, slightly skewed electronic sounds at the core of the melody, yet behind these are much more intricate subtleties which add a great deal of texture to the track, while the guitar melody brings comparisons to the charm and humble allure of The Cure's style.
'Violator' at first listen has the cheery charisma of a simple pop song, but it's the skilful electronic mastery of the ubiquitous background noise that will keep you coming back for more.
