Wild Beasts – The Devil’s Crayon (Domino)
4/5

If you asked me to describe Wild Beasts' sound and I told you there's elements of Tony Hadley and U2 in there, you'd be forgiven for thinking about skipping this lot and trying something with more street cred. However, if you did that, you'd be missing out on a very credible and decent band.
'Devil's Crayon' is the first single taken from Wild Beasts' debut album; Limbo Panto, and has as much accessible charm as a punnet of strawberries, with its summery sentiment and sweet tasting sound.
Vocalist Hayden Thorpe's voice hold the similar warble like sound that Tony Hadley does, but the impressive falsetto rises that Hayden adds makes Hadley's voice seem like it definitely belongs in the eighties, while Hayden delivers his lyrics in an almost operatic style.
The guitar sounds are brilliant on this track, delivering a great deal of texture and layers that nicely complement each other. The delay on the guitars does smell slightly of U2, but not so much that you're gonna imagine The Edge and his beanie rubbing up against Bono's arse when listening to it.
Wild Beasts have taken retro elements and turned them into contemporary sounding decent pop tunes, while stamping their style all over them with this track. To add to this, their recently released album is just as good.
