Andy Stochansky - 'Five Star Motel' (Gravity / BMG)

3/5

Andy Stochansky - 'Five Star Motel'

The spectre of 'Bends'-era Radiohead (and that album's much-utilised legacy) pervades 'Five Star Motel', the major label debut from Canadian singer/songwriter, Andy Stochansky.

Of course, shrill, fragile vocals combined with delicate, climactic arrangements and introspective lyricism make for a familiar musical blend. But Toronto native Stochansky possesses enough tunes and a strong enough voice to make the experience palatable.

And whilst '22 Steps' and 'Paris' prove he can ably perform the sensitive/melancholic thing, it's the more energetic stuff, notably 'Wonderful' that really sets him apart as an emergent talent on the rise.
