Jay Reatard - Always Wanting More (Matador)
4/5
By: Holly Barnes
The bluesy garage rock persona of a prolific Tennessee musician, Jay Reatard has a back catalogue that is scattered across many limited singles, demos and side-projects. On this 7", we get two tracks that reach only just past the two-minute mark. Jay chooses not to outstay his welcome with blasts of fast and uncomplicated garage rock. Both tuneful and raw, his vocals sounds as if recorded at least thirty years ago on a decrepit 4-track as he sings "you're such a useless bore, but you're always wanting more".
B-side 'You Mean Nothing To Me', bears a resemblance to a sped-up 'Another Girl, Another Planet' by The Only Ones. Here is the same kind of slightly unfinished sound, straightforward songwriting and vocal harmonies that are very vaguely tuned. Add to this almost Godfather-esque tremolo guitar and a toy keyboard sound and that really is all that's going on.
Simple, unambitious and without pretensions to anything more cerebral, this is music to turn up loud and dance about to in a pair of scuzzed up Converses.
