The Subways - I Won’t Let You Down (Warner)
4/5
By: Charlie Bradford
For all those bands out there that produce mediocre second albums (you know who I mean) and then blame the very made up 'second album syndrome', I have two words for you - The Subways.
Their second album All or Nothing is quite simply excellent. Produced by Butch Vig (responsible for Nirvana's Nevermind, you'll recall), you can hear the resulting all-American grunge influence, but there's still a British charm.
'I Won't Let You Down' is the record's second single, and is certainly an impressive, meaty follow up to 'Girls and Boys'.
This is a no nonsense rock rampage from start to finish, not scary, screaming rock, but the infinitely more listenable, inviting kind - think Foo Fighters or Blood Red Shoes. A punchy start is quickly followed by Billy Lunn's powerful vocals, preceding a calm before the storm feeling as the music slows slightly, waiting for Charlotte Cooper as she adds her weight to the chorus. I was dancing within seconds.
