Fleet Foxes – He Doesn’t Know Why (Bella Union)

4/5

You know when you're meant to love a band and you end up hating them. That's probably what many people feel for this great band, that Beatles-phobia that the pompous suffer. They're missing out on some gems though, some real valid ability that Fleet Foxes have far too much of for their own good.

'He Doesn't Know Why' is a bit Grease 2, a bit cinematic, but so utterly beautiful it fills the centre of their album with hot, gooey sounds that lets your mind wonder. The vocals are so haunting, so heroic and charismatic; the chorus just sweeps you off into the clouds like one of those old 1920's musicals where they're all dancing in tuxedos on soundstages covered with vibrant backdrops. It's an understated piece of loveliness that feels so fragile you daren't touch it, all the while falling victim to its melody.

As a band they're raising the bar, and this is certainly one of their finest pieces of music.
