The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made for You (Domino)
3/5
By: Richard Brant
Everyone has already heard the comparisons to the Walker Brothers, but 'My Mistakes Were Made for You' prominently harks back to the solo work of Scott Walker in the late 60's, sounding very much like 'The Old Man's Back Again' from Scott 4.
Alex Turner's Sheffield tinged drone fittingly suits this lazy sixties musical style, conjuring some vivid lyrical imagery that builds on the Walker-esque base from which it has grown. The lingering guitar chimes heaped over acoustic strumming accompanied by the London Metropolitan Orchestra gives a multiple of layers adding great depth to the sound.
The only problem is that the song has this James Bond cliché looming over its head. Is this the track they didn't want? Shall I also be cynical and say "it's coincidental that the new film is out at the end of the month?" Nevertheless, Turner and Kane have produced another respectful offering.
