Blacklands - The Wytchwood EP (Neednowater)

2/5

Al Murphy and his "revolving roster of musicians" bring the lonely Yorkshire moors into this Wytchwood EP as Blacklands. Formerly known as Murphy Kid & The Bad Luck Band, these guys once shared a lineup with Athlete, Tunng, and Bob Dylan - a very obvious inspiration in the melancholy warbling of this EP. With the uprise of a bearded folk band obsession in full swing, this bunch should fit in as well as any plaid shirted crooners, but it just doesn't happen.

Possibly fitting for a camp-fire singsong, Wytchwood lacks the rapturous emotion offered by other current folk favourites such as Fleet Foxes. The mildly haunting introduction gives way to chirpy acoustic melody and barely-there drumming, leaving you waiting for the emotional climax that doesn't quite happen.
