James Yuill - No Surprise (Moshi Moshi Records)

4/5

By: Kevin Molloy

James Yuill - No Surprise'No Surpise' is a sublime mixture of deep beats, blissed out synths, curiously warming vocals, clever musical in-jokes & acoustic touches on guitar and, seemingly, anything else Yuill can process through his gadgetry, modulate, and reproduce.

It's a loveably confused affair, loops reappear after their absence for half the song, inverted, melodiously reminding you in a somehow nostalgic way of the good times that happened all of a minute ago.

It's just after 3 minute mark that, having been lulled into a head nodding, smile laden, sleepy state, the beat kicks in, reminding you that you happen to be on the dancefloor. You quickly regain composure and start moving before anyone notices you were tripping off into blissland, ready for the triple beat that jolts you back into a dancing frenzy.

This is one for the the musos, for the pill poppers, for the lonesome, for the joyful and the in-betweens. It's great.
