The Bishops - If You Leave Today (W2)

2/5

By: Richard Brant

The BishopsLooking at the rather dull, unflattering EP photo artwork of The Bishops twins off on a jaunt in the forest with their drummer in tow, I thought this track was going to be a dark, lugubrious effort.

Instead I was greeted with a fairly up tempo positive sound, even though lyrically it is directed at lost love. Maintaining the retrospect approach incorporating Walker Brothers/Beatles-style wavering guitar strums, there has not been much of a change, and in fact if I had put on the track to find a bit more of a bewailing moan, at least a little more diversity would have been shown.

They do what they do well though, with the ever so tight 60's style harmonies that have become something of a given with their singles so far. There is however not enough to cement this two minute song in to the memory. Instead it tends to happily wash over you and drift off again in to obscurity. B side 'By Your Side' at least has a rather more infectious classic blues riff to bolster and accompany through out.
