The Boy Least Likely To - Every Goliath Has Its David / A Balloon On A Broken String (Too Young To Die)
4/5

This double A-side from The Boy Least Likely To gives fans a double whammy of sugar coated folk pop. Taken from their second album The Law Of The Playground, the band seems to sticking to what they are good at.
The first offering is 'Every Goliath Has Its David'. A tuneful yet simple little ditty, it sounds like an innocent boyhood adventure, "With a little bag of marbles/ And a catapult". Yet it is more likely this idealistic image is much deeper than that - as a slightly over dramatic press release points out this track is "...toying with the idea of powerlessness in the face of adversity" Wow! That makes me feel like I'm doing GCSE English Literature all over again. Yet despite the underlying sense of seriousness the dippy guitar riffs and the light jangly drums give create an air of ease and charm that you cannot help enjoying. Besides, any band that can incorporate the line "I've got puppy powers that I'm not afraid to use" in to a song is alright by me.
The 'other A' to this single is 'A Balloon On A Broken String'. Very similar in style to the first track, again it uses childlike imagery which undoubtedly masks a web of poignant meaning. Certainly a lot bouncier, the synth is that little bit more prominent and the drums are pacier, but Jof's quiet tones, the tra la la's and do do dooooo keep it firmly in the realm of sweet pop.
