Video Nasties - Jellybean (Dead Again/Turnstile)

3/5

By: Charlie Bradford

Video Nasties - JellybeanRight then... Video Nasties. And my history with them. When I saw this little CD in my 'to review' pile, I wasn't sure what to expect - not because I'd never heard of them, au contraire! I have been following Video Nasties for quite some time now; I can't remember where I saw them first, but I do remember seeing them support the then little known Late of The Pier in a pub in Reading years ago. I really enjoyed their innocent brand of indie pop and got hold of a few tracks, 'Little Flickers' and 'Three New Ideas'.

A few years later I went to see them again, now supporting a much more well known Late of the Pier. I'd insisted we got there early purposely to watch Video Nasties, and after their set, well let's just say I owed my friend a whole bar's worth of drinks, the band graced the stage wearing stockings on their heads and were completely terrible - to be as nice as one can be about it.

So, what with all that, that's why I wasn't sure what to expect. But thankfully, it seems they've put their days of being awful behind them - 'Jellybean' sees them return to more of an indie pop sound; truthfully, though not atrocious, it's a bit nondescript, sounding very similar to quite a few other indie pop bands playing the circuit. There's a whining bassline and speedy drums and in the middle it slows down as lead singer James Churcher announces he "...was your friend" but wants to be "...your jellybean".

It's easy to let drift by and it seems James has either had some singing lessons or spent soooo long singing he's actually improved naturally. Whatever, I'm pleased to say it seems they're over their brief foray into the world of terrible, so good luck to them!
