Alela Diane - White As Diamonds (Names)

3/5

This track sets out from the very first note to cut itself from the same cloth as so many classics before it, dripping with gentle, considered melodies. A familiar wispy, delicate framework echoes the clarity and beauty of masters before her including Vashti Bunyan herself.

Diane's vocals add shimmer to each note as her beautiful lilt touches each end of her subtle yet gritty range. The strings dance between the bones of the song, giving a strong flavour from its deeper, more hidden layers and occasionally stepping out into the light to give a glorious sun-soaked feel. The vocal pattern, as memorising as it is to begin with, wears a little thing towards the end and although 'White As Diamonds' has some stunning moments it feels as though the best of Diane is yet to come.
