The XX - Cystalised (Young Turks)
4/5
By: Richard Brant
An uncanny wailing brings us to the start of 'Crystalised', a song which greets with 60's style minor-chord clanging guitars reminiscent of that of The Animals or The Kinks. Thumping drums trundle towards the entry of the soft hushed male vocals, closely followed by that of his female counterpart.
The whole song is a dark, sultry interaction of retorts between the male and female vocals, displaying some quite cryptic lyrics, no doubt an illustration of the characters' complicated relationship. With some common repetition but no real identifiable chorus it's the constant circling of the guitar that weaves in and out that has a hypnotic, infectious effect that makes you want to listen again and again.
Regardless of how young they are its quite obvious The XX have some talent - you only need to listen to their almost unrecognisable b side cover of Aaliyah's 'Hot Like Fire' to realise they have some extensive musical vision. Minimalist yet making a deep impression; I will be interested to see what a fourth coming album from them will bring.
