Jack Penate – Tonight’s Today (XL)
4/5

Often, an artist comes back from a "creative sabbatical" and it'll sound more like they've sat on their arse, watched This Morning, Jeremy Kyle and a montage of other daytime tripe to avoid challenging their obvious creativity, than tried to come up with something new and improved.
'Tonight's Today' is certainly evidence that Jack Penate is not one of those mentioned above. His cheeky chappy indie style shown in first album Matinee entertained for a while, but just as quickly as he seemed to receive all the plaudits, there was somewhat of a backlash waiting around the corner - so back to the drawing board he went.
The result....Well, I was quite taken a back to hear this track with its mixture of influences from house to samba to afro beat, all with a lazy summer time temperament. The dream-like African style guitar melody glides over the top of the Vampire Weekend-like beat while the background South American style choir chorus gives that extra Latina dimension.
A merging of nights and days is a subject the majority of us our familiar with, but if getting inebriated engineers such an effortless change in musical direction...bring on the tequila.
