Delphic - Counterpoint (R&S)
4/5

Is it possible to write a review of a band from Manchester without mentioning the locale? Especially if you yourself are a writer from Manchester? Seems not, because this debut single from the relatively freshly born four piece (from the remnants of the much, but briefly hyped Snowfight In The City Center) does indeed summon ghosts of Manchester past; amalgamating the synth driven swoon and cocksure swagger of past idols to assemble an epic sound-scape that nods the head, but refuses to bow down before.
Instead Delphic are more the voluble younger brother of those that came before, and 'Counterpoint' updates the sensibility of Madchester's finest, a contemporary guise infused with that ethos. 'Counterpoint' itself is well executed and incredibly well assembled, even though for about twelve seconds I'm completely sure I'm actually listening to 'So Here We Are,' and trying to come to terms with the idea that pop as cerebral as this is where the future lies. How about an allegory? In which Delphic are an IKEA flat pack, and we're all f**ked.
