Alexander Robotnik - Obsession For The Disco Freaks (Hot Elephant)

3/5

By: Alex Hibbert

Alexander Robotnik - Obsession For The Disco FreaksAlexander Robotnick, AKA Maurizio Dami, must infiltrate that small group of bedecked music makers that warrant the word legendary without a curling of the lip, considering that 'Problemes D'Amour' was released in 1983 but is still a resolute staple of DJ sets all over the world. It seems apt then, that on this new release Robotnick's work comes, along with the not completely successful original version, a compendium of (much more successful) remixes by up and coming producers.

So whats the problem? The original's vocalcentric rumblings regurgitate but never focus, Robotnick's pastiche of the bass heavy "tunes" that elicit such obsession stumbles onwards unerringly, but the reprieve comes from the subsequent reworks, which elicit much more limb movement. In fact, upon hearing Rory Phillips' remix for the first time I felt compelled to write a note for later inclusion in this review. In hindsight, "F**k me, the Rory Phillips remix is amazing" doesn't quite read as well as I then had in mind, but I suppose the intent tells its own story.

Maybe it seems funny that 'Obsession For The Disco Freaks' is likely to become a piece of vinyl that Alexander himself seems to be lampooning? But only if you're in on the joke.
