Rose Elinor Dougall - Start/Stop/Synchro (Elefant)
4/5
By: Stephen Maughan
Former Pipettes singer Rose Elinor Dougall quietly releases her second single on the respectable Elefant singles club with a touch of old fashioned class matched with a mysterious spellbinding twist last heard on old Stereolab and Broadcast albums.
I wasn't overly impressed by Pippettes (shoot me), but as a solo artist Rose Dougall has that kind of timeless magic few modern singers are able to achieve. In the tragic tale of lost love, 'Start/Stop/Syncrho', as Dougall agonises "I will never be her...it's all over as I sit and watch lovers kiss in the darkened corners I think I was once beautiful to you".
This is sharp and elegant music, backed up with the haunting 'Static Saturday' as a B Side (it's a vinyl only release). On this form, her forthcoming album will be something precious indeed.
