Lissy Trullie - Self Taught Learner (Wichita)
4/5
By: Charlie Hearn
Lissy Trullie comes to these shores highly recommended, having conquered the scenesters of New York with more indie charm than a Friday night out in Shoreditch, the debut EP 'Self-Taught Learner' is out in the UK on Wichita Recordings.
Chugging along at a funky pace, the sparse groove based backline provides the perfect bed for Lissy's tom boy charm and dead pan attitude. 'Boy Boy' is the strongest track out of the 6 (which includes a plausible cover of Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor'), maintaining an upbeat tone helps to highlight the positives and avoids the more drab moments, particularly on the title track where Lissy's vocals teeter on monotonous.
Over all, a promising prospect for the future and a glimpse into some of the more savvy female talent from across the pond; hot on the heels of our homegrown heroines that still seem to be snatching all the headlines.
