Easyworld - London Camden Dingwalls - 15/2/01
4/5

Another new band. They seem to be all the rage these days, don't they? Well, you can't say that music in the UK isn't looking up this year; JJ72 getting top-30 hits with ease on every release, Feeder scoring a top five single and Ash re-familiarising themselves with the top ten. That's not to mention the efforts of US rock acts reaching the top 20 - Linkin Park, Wheatus, Papa Roach: they've all had their share of success on British shores, whilst the manufactured pop factory finally seems to be easing down business. For the moment.

The reason we say 'for the moment' is because it won't last forever. These things come in and out. 2001 was predicted as the year of rock by industry hot-shots - what's the bet 2002 is the year of pop? The point is that these things are all controlled, contrived - spontaneity existing in the fashion of music appears to be fiction. However, no point being cynical about it - enjoy these times and look for the new up and coming acts to don 'superstars' on their sleeves.
Easyworld could be one of them. Formerly known as Beachy Head last year, this three-piece have an enchanting lead-singer in the shape of Dav, whose voice transmits vocals of the most eye-opening and spine-tingling variety. The young lot also have a thumping girl bassist and rock as hard as any occupied Parisian honeymoon-suite in the evening. The observant music-lovers amongst you may have already become apprehensive: this prior description could easily lend its name to the previously-mentioned Irish indie band, JJ72. That's what the press will probably want to pick on when trying to describe them and to a certain extent, that's fair enough because they are quite tough to summarise.
This is because they're not just a guitar band: like the headliners of the show tonight, King Adora, they have pre-programmed dance loops and beats to accommodate their raucous energy and competent musicianship. Final number 'Better Ways to Seld-Destruct' (love it for the title alone, please) heralds the true nature of this band: 'Thanks for watching us and enjoy the rest of the bands tonight.' Yes. They're nice people. Sickening, I know, but as the room can't help but revel at the band on-show, it's assurred that this act has just as good a chance of cracking the world as any other new ensemble has in this 'year of rock'. The harmonies are in place, as are a fab first single on Fierce Panda and a genuinely grabbing live set... JJ-Seventy-Who?
