Longview - Hull Adelphi - 30/5/03

4/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Longview

Longview are doing this the old-fashioned way.

And, to be fair, they've done the incessant support slot thing; the band have already opened for Easyworld and Athlete this year and will hit the road with the Mull Historical Society next week. They are also in the midst of of a mammoth, headline toilet-circuit tour of Britain which continues throughout the summer. Certainly, no one could accuse the Manchester-based quartet of slacking.

And as befits a band so compliant with the traditional gig-slog, the music seems equally, effortlessly classic. Rob McVey and his band make 'indie' as it should be made: sky-scraping emotion, immense guitars, and instantly, gorgeously anthemic songs.

Even at this relatively early stage of their career, Longview simply sound too epic for venues of this size. From the heartbreakingly tender 'Still' to the stadium-sized atmospherics of 'When You Sleep', the eight tracks on display here at the Adelphi suggest that forthcoming debut LP 'Mercury' will be one of the year's quietly finest records.

Whisper it carefully: Longview may just be the one of the Next Great British Guitar Bands.
