Various Acts - '28 Days Later'

Forming the musical-accompaniment to Danny 'Trainspotting' Boyle's latest flick, '28 Days Later' - deemed by the press to be one of the UK's finest horror-films in decades - is this collection of intricate, orchestral swirls and shattered, atmospheric disturbances, largely composed by John Murphy. Occasionally offering haunting singing from the innocently-toned Perri Alleyne for the all-too beguiling hymns 'Ave Maria' and 'Abide With Me', elsewhere, proceedings are somewhat less produced, providing minimalist glimpses into the darker side of classical music.

Paradoxically, what results are almost a couple of dozen segments of sound which unify both a sense of calming and deep paranoia within the same listening-space; thus, as much as there's a temptation to close the curtains, turn out the light, listen, absorb and become lost within the swells of angelic soundscapes herein, prepare yourself for a simultaneous urge to have emergency-services on standby, just in case the threatening pulses of build-ups such as 'The Tunnel' genuinely do leap out of the speakers and cling to your throat in an uncontrollable rush.

For the less adventurous amongst soundtrack-hunters, there are a couple of original song-recordings to sink teeth into - namely the typically avant-garde pop of Grandaddy, whose 'AM180' is affirmingly gigantic, whilst the following, epic grandeur of Brian Eno's 'An Ending (Ascent)' is merely awe-inspiring in its suave gracefulness. With a final composition donated from Blue States, the irrepressible, strings-laden masterclass of 'Season Song', the ride nears its finish and, somehow, you suspect that the only way this adventure can be experienced further is to witness the moving pictures it originally depicted. If you dare to, that is.
