Whoa, that was odd. That's how most seemingly felt by the end of My Vitriol's half hour set this evening. Listening to their radio-friendly singles 'Cemented Shoes' and current one 'Pieces', you accordingly expect catchy, punk-fuelled guitar rock for their show. And that's what you get. But, you don't expect them to go all muso-y on us as well, do you?
Beginning with an instrumental, suitably titled 'Intro', there's no effort to greet us verbally, My Vitriol's instruments do the talking. Then, suddenly, it goes mental and ears are suitably deafened. You want to be marvelled, but you're most likely wishing they'd turn it down a bit. The pre-mentioned singles get heads nodding along and most seem impressed by the competent guitar wizardry of the performance. However, whether it fits into a Mansun support-slot is another matter.
Sometimes they swerve off into their own world and only a select few of the audience are invited to visit their planet; in short, a bit more band-to-crowd interaction would have been gratefully received, whilst it's only the singles that truly break through any barrier to offer signs of faultless charisma. A little less assuredness may prove endearing, too. However, judging them at a show such as this (they're not headlining, they've been given a shorter set time, it's not their audience, etc.) would be wrong. What can be noted though is that as they screech their way through the set-closers, an enthralling and mystified impression is enforced upon the onlookers. And, with more time to evolve, My Vitriol should sit in nicely amongst the pioneers of the UK rock scene of the 00s.
