New Found Glory - London Astoria - 20/12/01
3/5

There's a song knocking around at the moment called 'Private Eye', by a band called Alkaline Trio, New Found Glory's American kindred rock spirits. The chorus contains the line 'at the right place at the right time'. Well, nothing could sum (41) up the situation NFG find themselves in.

This gig, upgraded from the smaller LA2 due to overwhelming demand, highlights just how much devotion a couple of decent well-produced tracks can do for a band. Admittedly, NFG's big single, 'Hit or Miss' was screaming out for masses of radio airplay, but at least the band have enough in terms of both memorable tunes - 'Dressed to Kill', 'Sincerely Me', for instance - and plenty of wide-eyed, innocent charm to keep things interesting.
However, the nagging feeling remains that - such is the Great British Public's insatiable lust for identi-kit pop-punk - you only had to look at the hysterical reaction afforded to the thoroughly average support act, Fenix TX, to realise that any chancers purveying fast power chords, too much hair-gel and dye, and yearning lyrics (in an American accent of course) will get a break.
