The omens were good. With rockfeedback having recently bestowed a glowing five-star review upon Oceansize's debut LP 'Effloresce', and reactions across the board akin to a unified religious-experience, a truly mind-blowing show would go down very nicely.
And, as you may have heard, truly mind-blowing shows are what Oceansize are supposed to do. You may also have heard that they 'do' prog. Prog it may be - but, sheesh, how it rocks.
A typical Oceansize song is divided into two parts. There's:
(1) Approximately five minutes' worth of subdued, shimmering, Elbow-esque murmurings, and then;
(2) Another five minutes consisting of an eardrum-shattering, no-holds barred, aural blitz.
A deft combo, this is best displayed on 'One Day All This Could Be Yours'; as the eerie inception transforms suddenly into a staggering, thundering crescendo of sound, it's clear that all the big talk surrounding Oceansize isn't mere hyperbole.
So, whilst taciturn frontman Mike Vennart might not give much away in his between-song comments, but with music like this, it's not a problem. The sheer, unbridled energy of closer 'Saturday Morning Breakfast Show' is impossible to deny. Tonight, these five ordinary-looking lads from Manchester really do sound as deep as the ocean.
