Winnebago Deal - London Highbury Garage - 7/4/03

4/5

Winnebago Deal

In theory, we should be cynical - two-pieces in rock music, people: given the option of a cascading four-piece or a relatively muted duo, it's the quartet every time, right? The official response, in short: hell, no. If we've learnt anything at all from recent Messieurs The Whites or even Hotel and VV of The Kills, it's that twos-up often makes for a compelling musical-commentary - one that, when composed correctly, is every bit as nihilistically captivating as a traditionally-deemed 'full unit'.

Now add to the league Winnebago Deal: a band rockfeedback first salivated over after a tip-off months back, and a group that sent through a supremely glorious demo that we still to this day clasp to our hearts, all f**k-you chord-sequences, primal screams from the otherwise innocently-named Ben and a frantic cacophony of ear-piecing drum accompaniment. How they both do it, you'd never want to know - the magic and instant euphoria of their seals and squeals of raging intensity as fearsome as a call to arms, something that should never be analysed in depth, for the worry we may ruin the inherent mystique of our own new love.

Tonight playing as main support to Philadelphia's equally mildly-wild Burning Brides, the 'Deal are laying down the full score, as the Garage's PA almost buckles under a firm unpacking of unadulterated speaker-terror, ear-crushing blasts of exhilarated tantrum-infested noise ricocheting from wall-to-wall and hitting us where it hurts. 'Takin' care of business,' they wail, and, boy, are they - a ferocity only topped by an instrumental skull-crush of a finale, timely stop-starts and breakouts the main consensus that eventually mean we need a lie-down soon after.

And they well may be from Oxfordshire and declare us to be 'motherf**kers' during the course of the proceedings, but - damn - have they earnt the right to do so after this vivid display.
