'She'll probably be coming onstage wearing a dildo,' says a nearby voice reassuringly. Being a Peaches 'virgin' (i.e. reasonably ignorant, save for the hearsay, of the female Canadian rocker's live-performance), I (fittingly) took one massive gulp.
Peaches comes onstage tonight to the strains of the Strangler's 'Peaches' funnily enough, stimulating a massive roar from the largely pink crowd. Wearing an ill-placed blonde wig (which she yanks off and mockingly pretends to throw into the crowd), legs astride and electric guitar in-hand, she launches into a 90-minute sonic, sexual and sensory assault.
'Come on, everyone - you must know the words...' she bellows, baiting the crowd in her Canadian drawl. 'I, U , SHE TOGETHER...' On walk two gyrating female dancers, dressed-up in trucker-garb and beards. This is only the beginning. Brutal versions of 'Shake Your Dix', 'I Don't Give a F**k', 'Stuff Me Up' are all banged out - and Peaches simulates giving 'one of her bitches' a blow-job ( a banana is tucked into her hotpants) - while singing.
And plastic pink dildos, fake blood pellets, vomit and bondage aside, Peaches proves quite the stunning show-woman. She takes the piss out of all those classic 'cock-rock' poses, so beautifully performed by Kiss, Whitesnake, Bon Jovi and Van Halen in the hallowed echoes of foggy stadiums, and never once compromises her message.
Her 'on-screen duet' with Iggy Pop on 'Kick It', meanwhile, is amazing. As are cover-versions of Electric Six's 'Gay Bar' and Yoko Ono's 'Kiss Kiss', which she brags: 'Not even Yoko has heard yet.'
Naturally, she ends by breathily repeating, 'Imagine you are having sex with Peaches backstage... Imagine you are having sex with Peaches backstage...' Rightfully, most of us are by now. Celebrity vixen-lesbians - we need more of them.
