The Ordinary Boys - London King's College - 15/6/04

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

The Ordinary BoysIt would take a hardy soul to contend that The Ordinary Boys possess much, if anything, in the way of outright originality. With their spiky, politically charged pogo-pop and mod casual attire, they're not attempting anything that The Jam weren't doing over a quarter of a century ago. But take a look at Franz Ferdinand - and then Talking Heads. Not a whole lotta difference, there, either, is there?

Hell, there's even cover-versions chucked in tonight. What The OB's do possess by the bucketload, however, is charisma, ιlan and enough raw energy to power the national grid for an evening. Encapsulating this is the band's ever-animated frontman Preston, a tattooed bundle of caustic intensity and maniacal dynamism entertaining a highly enthusiastic King's College audience with a no-nonsense hour-long set showcasing forthcoming debut album 'Over The Counter Culture'.

With a trio of top-notch singles already behind them; the incessant 'Week In Week Out', the excellent, rabble-rousing 'Talk Talk Talk' and, to close, debut 45 'Maybe Someday', The Ordinary Boys' rapid ascent - albeit one taking in such well-trodden ground - looks set to continue.
