Various Acts - 'We Got Monkeys'

At rockfeedback, we consider ourselves more of the adventurous types. Fitting with Moshi Moshi.

Compilations can define genres and prove definitive to a revolution, but nearly every compendium is uneven unless it's a batch o' tunes by the same artist. So then, Moshi Moshi Records is supposed to be a sampling for us braver peeps. It's not meant for trainspotter-ringers of the scene who probably own nearly all of the 17 of the 40 previously released tracks. It's like a Pandora's Box for novices that may not live in the underground scene. Who might not have the knowledge, time, or geography to know their Noonday Underground from their Hot Chip. These aren't necessarily people un-passionate about music; they are just unguided in the jungle.

The magic of a Moshi Moshi compilation is it's not dinner-music. It's a postcard. A launching-pad. Surprises. Yet you know you'll be safe from the twee without alienating yourself from the potential of a good song. Dominated by assorted, slightly electronica-tinged, non-conformist artists - who all individually as well as collectively prove diverse and engrossed and entangled in their own non-categorical form/genre of music.

With this celebration of five years of MM, 'We Got Monkeys' showcases artists of past, present and future - from the steamingly hot-profiled, hand-made folk-beats of Matt Harding, to the lesser-known, art-film-backdrop, curious stoner-noises of Phil Stadium. Let alone the synthed-up, Americana flavour of Sukpatch and crackly vintage taste of the Bjork-like Zan Lyons. We must treat such releases as if we were still kids, sitting in our bedrooms, unwrapping a mix-tape for the first time.

Being open to discovery - it's a beautiful thing.
