Comanechi - London Spitz - 19/10/05

4/5

By: Sabuhi Mir

Comanechi'I think I broke my bass,' says the rather small but perfectly formed Akiko, one half of the London pop-punk duo Comanechi. Tonight, the possessed-sounding Royal Trux-esque duo play the Spitz club in east London (at a rather ungodly hour), part of the 'Plan B' magazine night featuring other luminaries like Charlottefield, Comasport and DJ Spykid.

Akiko, Japanese singer and lady drummer struts up onstage wielding a pair of drum-sticks and wearing shiny red leather boots. She eschews sexiness. Her guitarist is unusually tall, with a floppy fringe - not in a Hugh Grant kind of way - which obscures his face. In a recent live review of the band it was said of them: 'If sex is what sells - and it is - Comanechi are looking the devil in the eye.'

Well... everyone in the crowd is looking Akiko in the eye as she launches into their latest single 'Naked' released on the ultra-hip White Heat label. Furiously banging on the drums she says breathily: 'Hey boy, you have good shoes, hey boy you have good shoes, I want to see you NAKED, NAKED.' We are liking her way of thinking. The profundity of the song only lasts two minutes or so.

Then it's on to the next; 'Rude', and the next 'Mr Baba' with its Breeder soundings, and 'Victim'. 'Victim' sees Akiko repeatedly shout: 'You're the victim, you're the victim.' The crowd is left bruised and offended, not to mention deaf.

The gig is all over too soon, and it's time to roll over and smoke a cigarette. Surely the covers of whorey fashion mags beckon (if not done already) for Comanechi? Invited to play the much-talked about return of live music to Central St Martins School of Art in early November, the duo are evidently off on one. Join 'em.
