Wilt - 'My Medicine' (Mushroom)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

Wilt - 'My Medicine'

Despite the initial mixed reception, Wilt's 'My Medicine' - the Irish quartet's second long-player - is a real treat; the broken dreams, the financial tumult, the crushing disappointments: at last, it seems that it's finally falling into place for a band who truly deserve it.

Kicking off proceedings is swooning single 'Distortion', all swirling guitars and heaven-sent hooks, the following gorgeous assault of 'Understand', meanwhile, serving as the greatest song Michael Stipe never wrote, the title track even rivalling Idlewild's' 'You Held The World In Your Arms' for a near-perfect marriage of string-laden grandeur and rousing punkiness.

Containing more killer-choruses than any album has the right to possess, 'My Medicine' is without doubt one of 2002's most surprisingly strong albums. Closer 'The Plan' may have frontman Cormac Battle (how could anyone with a name like that possibly not be a star?) musing that 'After all these chances, this could go according to plan,' but - although it has taken a while - Wilt's time most definitely should be now.
