The Blondes - 'Summer Strut' (Middle Class Pig)

3/5

By: Matt Tomiak

The Blondes - 'Summer Strut'

'Summertime is the season of The Blondes!!' declares the press release. Give 'Summer Strut' (the Blondes' sophomore record) a listen and you'd be inclined to agree with it.

Balmy Californian evenings spent cruisin' on the freeway are invoked at the album's every turn, in much the same way as a Teenage Fanclub LP would.

The lush, cascading guitars of 'Vesna Velovic' are totally Byrds-ian, whilst 'Savoir Faire' recalls the radiant glam of Supergrass. They even give the much-covered '(I'd Go) The Whole Wide World' a whirl. A lovelorn tale originally recorded by Sussex punk cult hero Wreckless Eric, The Blondes were undoubtedly attracted by the lyrical references to searches for passion on the 'tropical beaches under the tropical sun.'

A fine remedy for any Rockfeedback readers who may feel a tinge of Seasonal Affective Disorder creeping in this autumn.
