Dover - 'The Flame' (EMI)
4/5

We might not know a mammoth deal about them over here, but Spanish rockers Dover are seasoned campaigners with over ten years of experience behind them: and their relentless, vivacious new album 'The Flame' burns bright.
And that's in spite of the fact that Christina Llanos' feisty vocals do resemble those of one Courtney Love - a comparison that just about any spirited, female-fronted rock band is likely to have to endure; in this case at least, such claims may reign legitimate.
So Dover deal in chunky, sugar-coated adrenaline-rushes, with surf-guitar hooks that successfully ensnare after a single listen, swooping down at every turn: 'Teenage Kicks' extended across a whole LP.
There's also a commendably gung-ho vigour which prevails through tunes like 'My Fault' and 'Die For Rock 'N' Roll' in the manner of, say, The Donnas. And it's such immediacy to each of these twelve sheer power-pop rushes that constitutes, as a whole, 'The Flame' often perilously close to greatness.
