The Flaming Lips - U.F.O.s at the Zoo DVD (Warners)

5/5

By: Gareth Roberts

The Flaming Lips - U.F.O.s at the ZooImages of animals in the wild interspersed with fans reaching fever pitch. A flying saucer-like structure descends from on high, from which emerge men wearing skeleton suits. In the wings to the right wait a large group of Santa Claus' holding torches, to the left a gaggle of what appear to be Pixie cheerleaders.

It could only be the Flaming Lips.

And as Wayne Coyne emerges from the roof of said flying saucer (which doubles as an elaborate lighting rig) inside a large plastic ball and proceeds to roll around the crowd, before making his way back to the stage like some suited up hamster, 'Race for the Prize' kicks in. There are few, if any, sights as inspiring in music today.

The gig itself was recorded in Oklahoma, and to be there that night must have been the highlight of many of the audience's lives. If they disagree, chances are they weren't there at all. If ever a band were made for live shows, its these guys, and subsequently they make perfect live DVD fodder. Visually it's stunning. Whereas bands like The Knife give a good account of themselves in a live setting, you just can't beat the excitement and the sheer absurdity of a Flaming Lips gig.

It does of course go without saying that they've got the tunes to match. In a whirl of smoke, confetti and giant balloons they set about performing what is essentially a greatest hits set with all the gusto of a band whose life appears to depend on them making as much of a spectacular scene as is humanly possible. Songs old and new sit side by side, each rapturously received by the massive crowd. I won't go any further, as with all excellent viewing experiences, to spoil the end would be cruel. Suffice to say it's without doubt the best live DVD I've ever seen, and essential viewing.

Oh, and did I mention there's a hot dog eating contest?
