Cheatahs – Minotaur/Warrior EP (Young and Lost)

2/5

By: Hayley Leaver

CheatahsA lo-fi fuzz of contemplative noise, Cheatahs - aka Nathan Hewitt - release 'Warrior/Minotaur', a double action affair reminiscent of any number of Jesus and Mary Chain/My Bloody Valentine off shoots. With 'Warrior', the Little Death guitarist takes simplicity to the extreme with barely a chorus to shake a leg at, but manages to create an oddly comforting and entirely melancholy drone.

There isn't anything grabbing any balls just yet, but this first offering from the London-via-Canada band definitely grabs some attention - or it should do. Second A-side, 'Minotaur', is basically more of the same: music offering a lot of hazy noise but little excitement. This debut single suggests that the band might be better appreciated at tinnitus-inducing levels, and should perhaps take something from their shoegaze contemporaries when it comes to being a little bit more than a lot of noise.
