Discoverey – So Insane (XL)

5/5

By: Dickon Stone

Wow, wow, WOW.  This is cool.

Imagine, if you will a kitchen blender on the work surface of the contemporary music scene;  throw into this machine a few copies of Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’, Phil Collins’ ‘Sussudio’, Billy Ocean’s ‘Get Out Of My Dreams’, ‘Hangin Tough’ by New Kids On The Block…‘The Goonies’ soundtrack… and a bit of Prince.

I know what you’re thinking – surely this is going to be the best thing ever?  And you might be on to something there.  ‘So Insane’ comes kicking and screaming out of the blended up womb-cocoon of super influencial, super commercial 80’s soul and pop (as I listen to this I am smiling broader than have for ages, and honestly believe this is an awesome example of post-modernism finally creating something beautiful for once).  Utilising a warm and comforting square-wave synthsised bassline throughout like an LCD Soundsystem hit, and exclusively using sampled drums; from dry crisp high hats to heavy almost dubstep-worthy loud clap/snare.

“When I saw you at the discotech / Sent my vibe out to ya…”- YES!  Wait until you hear this single. It is so hard to explain how tasteful the use of the 80’s sound is; something which has been tried time and time again, but with far less success as in this case.

I suppose we should only expect quality pop from a duo formed of members of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot.  For sh*ts and giggles I played the Hot Chip cover of ‘Sexual Healing’, Prince’s ‘Raspberry Beret’ and ‘So Insane’ by Discovery back to back… They could quite easily be from the same era.  And if you can put Discovery in the realm of greatness as maestro’s such as those, surely the only way is up.

My favourite song of the summer so far.
