The XX – Basic Space (XL)

4/5

By: Dickon Stone

‘Basic Space’ opens with delicate organ stabs; much like those brought to the Indie-Rock arena by quasi-Northern Rock sounding pop triumph Vampire Weekend.  However, The XX then go on to blow anything else of vague similarity out of the water.

Soulful vocals backed by an interesting collection of processed afrobeat and djembe-esque percussive samples collaborate with crisp, swinging, and occasionally broken traditional drums to make this release pretty wonderful; also boasting a catchy poppy chorus that sounds like a British contemporary Broken Social Scene, but with an almost IDM edge at times.

With a combo of male and female lead vocals that are so laid back they are practically horizontal; breathiness and lounge-y-ness on the mic teamed with big loose bass strums and dreamy picked guitar, this due-to-be-classic is a genius fusion of danceable-lounge, shoegaze-pop and indie-disco.
