Animal Collective – Summertime Clothes (Domino)

4/5

By: Izzy James

Animal Collective are a bit weird, and they know it. When they presented Merriweather Post Pavillion to the world back in January, the vast amount of excitable, obsessive fans out there were not disappointed in the slightest – perhaps they even felt a little bit flabbergasted at the sheer diversity and majesty of each song, which still sound as good – if not better - six months down the line. The nausea-inducing album art and breath taking originality means it is a definite contender for one of the best albums of the year thus far.

New single ‘Summertime Clothes’ has arrived just in time to compete for that prestigious ‘anthem of the summer’ spot, and it may just have a chance of pipping the rest to the post. More often than not, the winning song is a sugary sweet unashamed pop number, otherwise known as the very antithesis of Animal Collective’s efforts. However, sickly sweet lyrics such as ‘soak with my head in the sink for a while/chills on my neck and it makes me smile’ help to give reminders of all those perfect summer days, when the drinking starts early, the food is cooked on a barbeque and the nights are so hot you can’t sleep. Dreamy.

This song stays true to the bands’ signature sound, which, in traditional Animal Collective style, is like no other you will have heard. Odd, indistinguishable noises are littered throughout which are layered against hazy, fuzzy vocals. It could even be accused of being a bit more accessible than its predecessor, ‘My Girls’ for its obvious, sing-along chorus, but ultimately it does not induce quite the same awe filled reaction.
