Scissor Sisters - 'Scissor Sisters' (Polydor)

4/5

Scissor Sisters - 'Scissor Sisters'

In the words of the ravaging, instantly renowned disco artistes themselves, the Scissor Sisters' music is as much for 'hormonal teenagers and housewives with a dance bug as it is for the downtown party scene'. Fitting, then (or relieving, perhaps?) that 'Scissor Sisters' - the self-titled, debut album from the New York electro-shakers - bodes a stealthy wealth of tuneage that stretches far beyond their already ringing, synth-driven, Studio 45-harking pop-ploy.

Not only containing their massive dancefloor hit 'Comfortably Numb', that - despite not hitting the fat bird from Pop Idol off the number-one slot - has established them as one of the hottest life-changers for the seasons ahead; such a Bee-Gee'd-up transformation of the classic prog-rock Pink Floyd anthem is just a mere example of such eccentric musical philosophy and, indeed, aptitude.

Throughout the rest of it, there's Ozzy-esque, rumpy-pumpy guitar numbers, aka, 'Music Is The Victim', right through to tracks that wouldn't go a miss on a San Francisco GBL bar's jukebox (aka, all of them). From the sordid lyrical callings of 'fasten those pants for a lap dance' in 'Tits On The Radio' to the perspiring campness present in the form of lyrics such as 'I'm a classy honey, kissy-huggy, lovey-dovey ghetto princess' in 'Filthy/Gorgeous', it's all cheeky fun.

Render it an A&R-dude's dream: every track hugely palatable 'n' playable, and - musically at least - 'radio-friendly'. It demonstrates the funk-maestros as minimally, well... funk-maestros. As decadent, raunchy and cool as Bowie with the intrepid fun of a rollerblade-rink on a sunny Thursday afternoon.

Clearly, competently, confidently, the Scissor Sisters have brought back to the Big Apple what was lacking on the veering, monochrome aural-skyline - a big purple, glittering space-dust sun. Looks like their blast of Technicolor is going to brighten up the rest of the world too.
