Bastila Ghosts (Sunday Best)
4/5
By: Tom Hocknell
Naming a label Sunday Best was always a brave move, but thankfully their signings generally live up to the promise; particularly on this, Bastila’s second single. With a lyrical motif similar to the Doves’ ‘There Goes The Fear’, Chris Turvey wonders, ‘do you think of me when you’re …?’ Of course the chances are she isn’t, unless pretty girls clock every bloke checking them out, which wouldn’t be hard; it’s all of them.
However, accompanying the romance of the lyrics, are swooping guitar lines, wistfully drifting everywhere you want them to, suitably reminiscent of Ride, whose Mark Gardener’s produces this, and the album. It’s like JJ Cale playing with Happy Mondays. Clocking in at well over 5 minutes it’s the length of a Secondary school Science class, but without the Health & Safety issues, and also dissimilarly to science, this is magic.
