Dananananaykroyd Some Dresses (Best Before)
4/5

So once again Dananananaykroyd have come out with an epic song that overwhelms your eardrums, kind of like a Puccini opera condensed into five very surreal minutes would do.
‘Some Dresses’ has just a hint of posi-hardcore about it, opening with its shouts of “YEAH! Can you feel it in the air?/ There is something brilliant approaching…”. Their sound is an embodiment of the triumphant slap-on-the-face bands around at the moment… think Tubelord or Favours for Sailors (RIP!) amplified by a million. Yet, sadly, there is a dodgy ten seconds near the end of the record that sounds like a p*ss take of an Iron Maiden bass riff.
The whole lyrical idea is pretty unique (“we can choose the pattern, identify the page and/ We can choose the pattern that the music will arrange”); using seamstressing as a metaphor for making music isn’t exactly a regular occurrence in the realm of modern popular songwriting. With an individual band name comes distinctive lyrics, which are refreshing to listen to.
This single is all over the place, touching on so many different genres that it’s like a pick and mix chosen by a six year old kid on a sugar high… a bloody delicious pick and mix. Worth a listen if you want to get inspiration to conquer the world, or something along those lines.
