Miike Snow – Animal (Columbia)
3/5

You want catchy? You got catchy. I’m trying to avoid a terrible pun here about piggy flu but ‘Animal’, the debut UK single from Swedish pop moguls Miike Snow (Mike Snow, Meek Snow, who knows?) is as infectious as said current pandemic.
Two members of the trio are songwriting/production duo Bloodshy & Avant, responsible for Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’, and that explains rather a lot. On first listen ‘Animal’ does sound quite twee, and very, well, Swedish, but the repetitive anthemic chorus and rhythmic beat weasel their way into your mind. And stay there, like ‘Toxic’ did back in 2007.
There's plenty of vocal overlay in the vein of Animal Collective and Passion Pit, but there's a production quality that one would only expect from a production team who have produced the likes of Madonna and Kylie, it's good quality, but doesn't really have much depth.
‘Animal’ is repetitive, it'll probably drive most people mad after a few listens, but it is what it is, a catchy piece of summer-tinged pop. Just don't take it too seriously.
