Biffy Clyro – That Golden Rule (14th Floor)
4/5
By: Guss Mariot
After the success of standalone single ‘Mountains’, Biffy Clyro were going to need a song of epic proportions to do them justice. And ‘That Golden Rule’ is just that - epic.
It’s three songs in one. First you have the rugged, dirty verses, perfect for Simon Neil’s growl, and even more perfect for kicking up a storm. Then you have an unexpected time change, and a chorus that will be lending itself to more than the occasional sing-along.
For the finale, enter a huge string section, bringing a sense of grandeur to the song. Many bands may have tried to put a gritty solo in here; the build up certainly lends itself to many opportunities. However Simon Neil really shows his songwriting capabilities by sticking with the strings, and the result is simply awesome.
‘That Golden Rule’ is possibly the only song that could have followed ‘Mountain’, and its success must almost be a certainty.
