Radiohead - These Are My Twisted Words (Self Released)

4/5

By: Bronya Francis

This leak, which was officially released as a single (of sorts) on the 17th of August, is a typically quite beautiful song by Radiohead and their most prolific mastermind Thom Yorke.  Though ‘These Are My Twisted Words’ does not immediately stand out and declare itself as a chef d’oevre like a rather vast amount of Radiohead’s anthems, it still manages without breaking a sweat to create an atmosphere that is rather eerily divine.

A luscious riff preludes this Radiohead half-marathon, which is reiterated throughout the five-minute track.  Thom’s yearning vocals emerge from the bleak 2’40” ravine of echoed guitar bends, seducing the listener yet again, repeatedly pleading “when are you coming back?/ I just can’t handle it...”.

It’s difficult to envisage a way in which Radiohead could go wrong.  I’m finding them increasingly hard to criticise, and what’s more, it’s even more difficult to not make this sound gushing.  But the truth remains that their music is, always, so bloody gorgeous – and in ‘These Are My Twisted Words’, Radiohead have delivered another near-flawless creation.
