Passion Pit – To Kingdom Come (Columbia)

3/5

By: Liane Escorza

‘To Kingdom Come’ is the newest single from Michael Angelakos & co’s debut album, Manners. Following the critically acclaimed Chunk of Change EP, all ears are on their danceable approach to rock music - this single, however, save the 80’s sounding synthesizers and samplers, is more of a melodic (though still infectious) take on Angelakos’ diary of feelings than a dynamic buzzing pop anthem – only obtained in the Grum Remix version.

The curious thing about this single is the DIY quality of its sound, as if Passion Pit were just a one-man band relying on the help of unpredictable arrangements of saxophones, keyboards and drums popping up as he peels off pages of heartbroken lyrics. It contains the shimmer and hooks expected of an electro-indie ballad as this, but it also feels somewhat flat and plain, as if they all had reached to a consensus for its final sound instead of having friends exercising their spontaneous compassion and empathy in aid of their frontman’s emotional collapse.
