Sweethead – The Great Disruptors (Strange Addiction)

3/5

By: Mariota Spens

Take one sexy as hell woman and three guys dressed in dirty-looking business suits and you get Sweethead.  Their debut single ‘The Great Disruptors’, is a sultry, low-beat tune that shifts seamlessly between the seductive vocals of sex-bomb Serrina Sims, and the equally hypnotically alluring guitar solos of Troy Van Leeuwen (formerly of Queens of the Stone Age), accompanied by a beating heart bass riff and a quick but rhythmic drum beat. Together they have this grungy-secretary vibe - like a group of redundant city workers who don’t know what else to wear, which somehow feels not entirely inappropriate at present.

The shining emblem of Sweethead is Sims - a woman whose voice is soaked with gentle seduction and an air of acquiescence, similar to that of Blondie or The Long Blondes, yet with a darker, less girly-girl tone to it.  As for the band’s Queens of the Stone Age origins, it does have some clear similarities, yet Sims‘ vocals manage to lead their sound down a more sultry, smoky path.

It’s true that they haven’t exactly broken any boundaries, but you can’t take away the fact that they have me reaching for my red lipstick.
