James Yorkston & The Big Eyes Family Players - Folk Songs (Domino)

2/5

By: Matt Cole

Erstwhile Fife Folky James Yorkston has swapped his Athletes for new find The Big Eyes Family Players on latest album, the pragmatically titled Folk Songs.  A collection of traditional folk standards influenced by the interpretations of a number of 60 & 70’s icons to the genre, Folk Songs is perfectly… nice.

Yorkston has a nice voice with a touch of naivety. The arrangements are certainly nice, with some nice strings, nice woodwind and a nice bit of percussion throughout. The songs range from nice ballads such as Hills Of Greenmoor to the jaunty Mary Connaught & James O’Donnell, which got me jigging involuntarily, a rather nice experience.

In fact the whole thing is so relentlessly nice it makes we want to go out and murder a f**king puppy if only to remove the itchy, cotton wool coating of niceness that has now attached itself to my brain.

Nice.
